Sources of energy classroom activities

Look at the video, diagrams, maps, photos and texts from the resources of the possible sources of energy. Complete the chart below using the headings provided. Aim to include at least 6 sources of energy.

  1. Energy source eg coal
  2. Is it sustainable? (will it get used up or is it renewable?)
  3. Its advantages. (Is it efficient, easy to produce, etc?)
  4. Its disadvantages or problems. (Is it costly, will it pollute, is it dangerous etc?)

A
Energy source
B
Sustainable? Y/N
C
Advantages
D
Disadvantages
Wave
Y
Energy from vertical wave movement.
Very costly to design and build.
Solar
Y
Can be used effectively for water heating or in remote places that don’t have electricity.
Still quite expensive.
Wind
Y
Movement of air caused by sun heating and altering air pressure.
Turbines need to be in places with regular wind.
Fossil fuels
N
Formed from organic matter buried and compressed over millions of years.
Release pollution into the atmosphere :
  • Coal
  • Oil
  • Natural gas
Tides
Y
Water from tide movement trapped in some estuaries. Tides caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.
Not widely used.
Nuclear
N
Energy from splitting atoms.
It is costly and produces radioactive wastes.

Sustainable energy

  1. What sorts of climate would suit the use of solar energy?

  • Solar panels can be in multiple locations and areas with low cloud coverage and that receive large amounts of solar energy are best for solar panels.

  1. New Zealand is well suited to the use of wind energy. Why?

  • New zealand's landscapes provide one of the most efficient wind resources in the world. Wind turbines are not producing greenhouse gas emissions as they are generating electricity and are easy to remove, making wind power one of the most environmentally friendly forms of electricity generation.

  1. New Zealand in the past has spent a lot of money in prospecting for oil and natural gas, but little on other more sustainable forms of energy such as wind power. Explain!

  • For the future New Zealand would be better if we hadn't spent money looking for oil and instead spent money researching and developing renewable energies such as: Wind, solar, Tides, Wave etc.

Descriptive writing - Kims Cat

Descriptive Writing

A very peculiar event has been taking place on Herald Street, in Dobson. For a while now the local school, has been experiencing a “rubbish collecting cat”.

R2, the fat white and grey tabby cat, sets out on his adventure at Paparoa Range School, on stormy treacherous nights. Roaming around the playground and under the creaking old wooden floors that the verandah is made of, he begins to search deep and deeper under the crumbling soil as it falls helplessly through his silky fur. Then after collecting, ice-block sticks and shiny foil packets he holds them restless in his mouth as he ‘purrs’ at the sound of the clattering rain.

R2 pounces through the door and sits there with a screeching “meow” until Kim, his owner hops out of bed with a face full of exasperation. The clock ticks late at night with trees crashing against the windows of her kitchen. Mountains of rubbish begin to pile up at the pathway of her front shiny door.

It is said that the cat has been doing this since the year after he was adopted from Taylorville by Kim. He is now 9 years of age and is doing great to be a part of the community.

Greymouth Writing

Dear Mayor Kokshoorn,
Greymouth is a proud to be bounded town placed in the West coast. As your feet strike the start of our town you will feel welcome to be in such an awesome place. But, after greymouth was brutally shattered in the Mainlander section of the newspaper. The competitive locals of Greymouth will fight to the best of their ability to keep our town alive.

Here in Greymouth we have countless amazing facilities providing: health, activity, creativity/art and general well being. We have a local hospital with numerous loving doctors/nurses. Our sports range is great here starting from: league to netball going all the way to athletics. Greymouth is smothered in artwork and creative ideas. There will always be a spot to add art. Nimmo gallery represents our art effectively! Just recently built, was the new Recreation centre its; filled with loads of exhilaration. It’s got a gym, and basketball/netball courts. This is great for when our inclement weather starts to kick in.

The West Coasts environment is packed with astonishing views from elevated mountains to gushing rivers. There is a huge amount of physical activities to make your adrenaline rush. Our wilderness is packed with trees and beautiful sights. Greymouth is surrounded by the crashing tasman sea and through our town flows the grey river. The sea gives all of our locals opportunities to surf or kayak. Walking and biking tracks are flax strips weaving in and out the west coast; with different observations.

In addition to our great facilities and environment; our local folks keep the facilities . The locals keep our town together by, being kind and helping out someone in need. We have great people that are always willing to help out or give something a go. Greymouth have crazy events and we will always end up having more than enough helpers. All our locals bound together to help each other at our toughest times. E.g. Not long back we had a cyclone pummel our town, the fire department was called out and most people left their jobs to help others.

In order to all these creative and awesome facilities people and much more. The people who live on the west coast should be proud of the people we all have become together as a community and its such a privilege to live in such an astonishing place in new zealand.

There are a few things that could be changed in greymouth but one thing that will never be changed is our environment and people. So, next time your next door neighbor says Hello give em’ a smile and say hello back!

Sincerely,
Samantha Hagenaar
